Sustainability - because when all is said and done...

... there is usually a great deal more said than done!

Sustainability is a buzz-word which in truth, is often used to describe anything but its true meaning. In the face of rising populations and climate change, how can anything we do be truly sustainable? Perhaps the answer is that it cannot, but at every point, every decision-making branch, we can choose a path which is more or less sustainable. And the composite effect of many small decisions has the power to change the world. Sounds a little idealistic, we know, but in the words of John Lennon "we're not the only ones, perhaps one day you'll join us..."

We strongly believe in maximising the sustainability benefits - which are present in all forms of development and change - for our clients and the wider community. To see how this translates into projects, please follow the links on the right.

If you are seeking a landscape or visualisation consultant who puts sustainability at the heart of their approach, please get in touch with us.

Fine words from a Fat Cat?

The corporate market is characterised by window-dressing rather than significant reduction, reuse and recycling. For our part, we have:-

  • a sustainable transport strategy: as we work from home, we don't commute; we have one, low CO2 emission car, and we minimise and combine journeys where possible;
  • a recycling policy: to recycle everything that the local authority will allow us to;
  • a simple energy policy: a very low -power server; and turning all PCs and appliances off every night and whenever possible at other times;
  • a keen interest to pursue climate change adaptation and mitigation, green infrastructure, and related agendas through our landscape and visualisation projects - as you will see from many examples on this website.

We suspect that there are few consultancies who could match our low-consumption and low-wastage approach, whatever their policy documents say!

  • EASEL Drainage Strategy
    EASEL Drainage Strategy
    EASEL Drainage Strategy
    Within the context of this substantial JBA drainage strategy for East and South-East Leeds (EASEL), we provided a number of landscape-led proposals, including: optimising Sustainable Drainage opportunities through creative use of greenspace; and micro-engineering the streets and footpaths to prevent inflow of flood water into vulnerable buildings, seeking rather to deflect them to soft flood storage areas.
  • Mersey Life Green Infrastructure
    Mersey Life Green Infrastructure
    Mersey Life Green Infrastructure
    This Maslen-JBA project took a Green Infrastructure approach to an existing Environment Agency project, Mersey Life. In brief, our methodology was to map and overlay social, economic, ecological, recreational and water network resources; and to seek opportunities to enhance all of these aspects through a Green Infrastructure approach. The resulting strategy and project list is being taken forward for funding from the many agencies and authorities who would benefit from such a synergistic approach.
  • North Cave Catchment Strategy
    North Cave Catchment Strategy
    North Cave Catchment Strategy
    North Cave flooded badly in June 2007, damaging 31 properties. Whilst there was a predictable reaction of 'build the defences higher and deeper', we sought to pursue a catchment-based strategy. This included reducing the influx of flood water from upstream; and using the natural form of the land to more safely direct water away from houses. The latter option has the backing of local landowners and we hope to see North Cave better prepared for future extreme weather events.
