and welcome to our highlights of 2018

Below we set out our highlights of 2018, which include projects, technical work for the Landscape Institute, staff changes and why geographers are really just latent landscape architects.

SuDS Masterplan
Donaldson Filters, Hull

Donaldson SuDS

When the Plant Manager of the Hull branch of major international filter manufacturers, Donaldsons, phoned to ask if we could assist with environmental improvements around their factory, naturally we said yes.

Still at concept stage, but potentially involving exciting retrofit SuDS, pictorial meadows, and one of the first industrial planting sites of the Northern Forest, this project could be a trail blazer for Hull.

2B's Rain Garden

"What's a Rain Garden, then?"

It's a garden that catches the rain!

This blog documents the progress of an unloved and abandoned avocado-suite bath (following house renovations) into a key part of our house and office Rain Garden, during 2017-2018. We explain the process - from calculations to downpipe to mudbath to finished feature.

As it turns out, the much-maligned 70's avocado bathroom suite colour works really well in a pond - and now we love it again :)

Sowerby Bridge Masterplan

Amongst our favourite jobs of 2018, Calderdale Council and Sowerby Bridge Town Board had a vision for a landscape-led masterplan, to help guide major highway improvements in the area.

Our great enthusiasm for the Sowerby Bridge Masterplan work was clearly appreciated. So we had to share this with you, upfront!

Thank you! Fantastic turn around and they look really good. Nothing has been too much trouble and your presentation has been extremely professional. I appreciate your creativity. You thought of ideas that exceeded your commission and excited the community. I would really like to work with you again and would recommend 2B for any commission.

Historic Rock Garden Restoration
Burnby Hall Gardens

At least two years in the planning, 2018 saw the historic rock garden at Burnby, near Pocklington, finally being planted.

Never ones to stop when the plan is drawn, 2B turned out (on Elizabeth's birthday!) with the fabulous team of Burnby Staff and volunteers, to take another step towards the restoration of this historic garden to its former glory.

ZTV in Greece

It was our great pleasure, early in 2018, to do two things we had never done before: to work for a Greek client; and to produce a multi-point Zone of Theoretical Visibility (ZTV) for a large wind farm.

Here's the story.

Rain Garden Planters
Hebden Bridge Town Hall

Hebden Bridge Town Hall Rain Garden Planters

So, now we have explained what a Rain Garden is, here's another. This one was based on raised planters, designed as a showcase for the Calderdale "You Can Slow the Flow" information campaign.

With the kind support of the Hebden Bridge Town Hall management team and a lot of hard work from 2B staff and some fabulous volunteers, the raised planters were installed in June, followed by an official opening shortly after.

Landscape Institute Visualisation Guidance

During 2018, Bill has spent a lot of time working on Visualisation Guidance for the Landscape Institute.

Although unpaid, it is uniquely rewarding to be able to work on a document that will set standards for the landscape profession and beyond.

Here, we describe some of the trials and tribulations, and look forward to a successful outcome in 2019!

Staff changes at 2B

This year saw one out, one in.

Matt left us in the late summer, to join Groundwork Middlesborough. Cara is a geography graduate, and we thought her enthusiasm for landscape architecture would be a great fit for 2B. She has started with us part-time, whilst working towards her Masters in Landscape Architecture.

Read what she has to say about the many parallels between her geography studies and her chosen career of landscape architecture.

And so to Christmas and the New Year

Thanks for sticking with us this far!

We hope you find some of our adventures interesting - we would love to know your thoughts on any of them, so do please

Professionally, we are looking forward to the adventures of 2019 with our usual enthusiasm for the challenges to come - even if, at this moment, 'chaotic' barely describes the general outloook .

Nonetheless, we hope that 2019 brings you happiness and prosperity. It may be foolish to be optimistic, but let's hope that the musical genius, Leonard Bernstein, was never more right than when he said:

To achieve great things, two things are needed: a plan, and not quite enough time.
